Report on the 10th Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons (ACNS)

The 10th Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons was organized by Prof. Serik Akshulakov, President of the Kazakh Association of Neurosurgeons from September 9-12, 2014 in Rixos President Hotel, Astana, Kazakhstan. The motto of the congress was truly experienced “Unique Science – Unique City; Let’s meet in the heart of Eurasia” as the program was a veritable feast of Neurosurgical academics and friendships.

With the able guidance of Prof. Yoko Kato, President, ACNS, Dr. Chingiz Shashkin, Organizing Secretary, Dr. Yerbol Makhambetyov, Scientific Committee Chairman, and Dr. Iype Cherian, Counsellor General the Congress attracted more than 600 participants from over 56 countries.

The congress also had presence from United States and Walter E. Dandy society, its President Saleem Abdulrauf hailed this meet as a bridge between the east and west of the neurosurgery world.

After welcome and registration on September 9th, 2014 at the Republican Neurosurgical Center, Astana, there were various academic lectures and hands on workshops on multiple subspecialties. All participants gathered at the Opera House for a spectacular grand opening ceremony followed by gala dinner at 7:00 PM.

The scientific sessions on September 10-12 were a parallel brainstorming and thought provoking neurosurgical scientific presentations of over 170 oral and 370 poster presentations. The Executive Committee meeting was organized on September 10, 2014 at 8:00 AM. President Prof Yoko Kato gave her report, thanked Prof. Serik Ashkulakov for his superb organization of the X ACNS . All members were updated on the membership status and the financial status of the ACNS.The 12 th ACNS site was decided by secret ballot and the bid was won by Dubai. The Presidential dinner was hosted on 10th September along with Friendship dinner for the young neurosurgeons and delegates. Other meetings including educational committee, editorial board, AWNA and YNS were held with good participation on 10th and 11th September. The regularly held ACNS Courses were appreciated and the organisers were exhorted to continue them with special interest of young neurosurgeons. The ACNS manual comprising of various technical nuances from skin to skin with beautiful illustrations from masters in sub-specialties was released. The need to start 20 ACNS centres all over Asia with each centre catering particular stronghold of neurosurgical sub-specialty encouraging neurosurgeons for a brief stint in specialisation was accepted and planned to put it into action.

The overall atmosphere was simply fantastic with the city, weather, food for thought and culinary delicacies. The 11th September banquet was a showcase of Kazakhstani culture- a treat for the academically overdosed brains. The Congress ended on 12th September after morning session. The delegates revelled in a guided Astana tour and left with an indelible impression, souvenirs, and fond memories of the Astana 10th ACNS.
