Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons is a world body of Neurosurgeons which works for the interest and the betterment of trainees of young neurosurgeons worldwide. The congress consists of the top neurosurgeons from Asia who exchange innovative technology and share experiences through society meetings. ACNS aims to provide an equal opportunity to all the young neurosurgeons by conducting educational workshops and courses. Keeping this tradition, ACNS in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery of Liaquat National Hospital & Medical College, University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire and Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons organized a 2-day comprehensive 2ndAdvance ACNS Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery Course from 13th to 14th December, 2014 in Karachi. The aim of this course was to lay emphasis on the techniques of endoscopic approaches of skull base lesions.
The elite faculty included Amjad Shad (UK), Consultant Neurosurgeon University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust; Shahz Ahmed (UK) Consultant ENT and Skull Base Surgeon University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust; The course director, was Salman Sharif (PAK), Chief of Neurosurgery, Liaquat National Hospital & Medical College, Karachi. Tariq Salahuddin (PAK) Professor of Neurosurgery Lahore General Hospital , Lahore; Khalid Mehmood (PAK), Consultant Neurosurgeon Lahore General Hospital , Lahore were local faculty.
Day 1 of the course started with an overview of the course by Salman Sharif followed by a talk on the basic anatomy of nasal sinuses by Khalid Mehmood. Dr. Shahz presented his talk on Sphenopalatine and ethmoidal Artery ligation techniques and orbital and optic nerve decompression. Amjad Shad then pointed out the indications and limitations of the endoscopic approaches in skull base surgeries during his talk. The session resumed after a short lunch break with a Live Surgery performed by Dr. Amjad, Dr Salman and Dr. Shahz, being observed by the participants simultaneously. A near total excision of a pituitary adenoma using transnasal approach was shown to the participants and an interactive session was coordinated by Dr. Tariq Salahuddin. A series of case discussion was then followed by the faculty speakers with the participants. The day was concluded by a refreshing dinner for the faculty and participants organized at Ocean Grill on roof top with views of Karachi by night.
On Day 2, the shocking news of Prof Bashir Ahmed was received. All the participants and faculty remembered him and all the thoughts were with Asif, Qasim and family. The first talk was about the evolution from microscopic to endoscopic sinus surgery by Dr. Salman Sharif followed by anatomy revision of different modules. Dr. Shahz taught how to raise nasal septal mucosal flap reconstruction. This was followed by a live surgery of a suprasellar grade 3 pituitary adenoma excision and nasospetal flap and reverse flaps demonstration conducted by Dr. Shahz, Dr Salman and Dr. Amjad and coordinated by Dr. Khalid Mehmood. A short lecture on management of craniopharyngioma was conducted by Dr. Amjad shad and Biryani lunch break followed. The session continued by talks of CSF Leak repair techniques by Dr. Salman Sharif and Classifications of Sellar Lesions by Dr. Amjad Shad. This was followed by Series of cases and interactive assessment of the participants, coordinated by Dr. Shahz. The end of the day was marked by a closing ceremony and distribution of certificates to the participants and organizers of the program.
